This page is where I posted my third draft, and that means this is the final time I will write the introduction. There are modifications to this, whether it is visible or not, but I surely made some changes. The final draft is written below, and as for the supervisors, please leave a comment below in order for me to do better in the future.
Background, Goal, and Areas of Interaction
I feel that I have the responsibility to protect this world from any more dangers. This expression came to me since I was just sitting in grade five junior schools. I have resolved to do this due to the fact that no one really cares if the world they live in dies slowly because of their own doing. What makes me really sad is how this country, my country of Indonesia, can’t afford to take care of its diverse and beautiful nature. It’s just a shame how it was known as a paradise and now it is known to be one of the world’s nation that is undergoing speedy destruction to its own. Because of this, I have decided on a final goal for this project, and that goal is to bring awareness to the community regarding the ongoing issue of the tormented environment.
However, what inspired me the most into doing this project was my country and its easy going not caring people. I even wondered, do they even know that they are living in a world that is suffering because of their doing, or do they not care about their next future generations. I wanted people to at least know and care about the environment. It was these queries that lead me into a goal of making people aware of the weakening world. I hope I can reach through their hearts and make them be aware.
I have chosen people ages 20 to 65 years old as my primary target audience. The reason why I chose that age range is because they will have more respect and have less disdain on what I’m doing. They are more open-minded and will listen to my words. The reason why I did not choose people below 20, especially teenagers, they have less respect and will not understand the current situation of the environment. Not all teenagers are like that, and I pointed them as my secondary target audience. Children will not fully understand and they will just wonder off without paying attention, and they are my third target audience.
For my personal project, I have ideas coming through me of how I can achieve my goal. Some of the ideas are poster advertisement, photo book, and essay report regarding the goal. After going through research and figuring out all the possibilities of how I can achieve my goals, I decided to create a photo book containing pictures of the suffering environment. The reason why I decided to create a photo book is because a photo book is easier to be accepted to the community and easily understood. Most people will be more convince when they saw images rather than just writings. With images, they can have a deeper feeling of how the environment needs their help. A poster advertisement is just too fast to do, and people rarely even take a glance at the poster. With an essay report, people will be easily bored with just pages full of writings.
The photo book will approximately be done in four months from now. This excludes the possibilities of unwanted conditions. It will contain mostly photos taken personally by me of nearby environment. Brief information and introduction of the making of the book will also be included. The book will be in B5, with approximately 50 pages, including information, introduction and citation, excluding title page. In each page contains 2-3 photos, depending on the size of the photo. The book will be colored green. For me to know how I have completed my goal, I need to set a perimeter. When the product is done, I have to distribute a minimum of 20 books to my target audience. After they have received the book, I will then give a questionnaire regarding the rating of the book. If 75% of the receivers said that I have succeeded in promoting the environment, I will deem my goal achieved.
Before writing this final introduction, I was on a dilemma whether Community and Service (CAS) or Environment (E) was a better one for my personal project. After sometime, going through lots of modifications, I decided that Environment suits my personal project better. Just by looking at its name, it must have a deep relation with the environment, and it’s the best for my personal project. My project is principally regarding myself and other people having responsibilities of saving this planet from further harm. Also, I’m reflecting upon the three questions of Environment to have a better understanding of the relationship between the choice of AoI and my project.
- Where do we live?
- What resources do we have or need?
- What are my responsibilities?
I’ll make that ‘we’ into ‘I’, since I’m working individually on this project. I have been living in Jakarta since I was born. This city has always been known as an ‘unfriendly’ city, unfriendly as in not in a negative way of thinking. By unfriendly, I mean that the environment and the surroundings of the city has never been a clean one. Pollutions are everything, mainly air pollution. Millions of cars drive through the city’s roads every day, often traffic jams can be seen, and traffic jams are the main subject of the city’s high air pollution. Pollution is the only subject that matters; waste is another problem, accompanied by many other that contributes to the city’s unfriendly environment. These things can also be included into my environmentally photo book as another important subject.
Anything that is around me is considered to be another of many resources available. The environment includes everything inside is a part of that environment, and everything can be used. Start just by doing small things; separating waste at home, using paper double-sided, save electricity by turning off when not used and keep telling yourself that I need to save this planet. As for my personal project, I will use anything that is environmental friendly and recycled resources at maximum. I will try my best not to use new things. The resources needed includes; recycled printing paper, low energy or efficient printing machine, eco-friendly computer, and eco-friendly printing ink. Those are just the primary resources needed. If some urgent sources are needed, then I’ll just use anything possible near me.
I has a human being has the responsibility to save the planet from danger. And as for my project, I have the responsibility to show people how this world is suffering because of human hands, especially to people ranging from 20 to 65 years old, since they have more respect and have less disdain and will understand the worst case situation deeper. I can share my knowledge and feelings to that community by sharing my photo book, which contains pictures of this tormented world.
Planning (Activity Schedule)
For the shake of time management and eventually completing my personal project, I have set up plans to accomplish my objectives of the project. The table below is an activity schedule made by me for my personal engagement in the project. The table is in an approximate time. It does not include unexpected situations and conditions. Again, this was to enhance my time management and organization skills.

- I will need to find out the following things to achieve my plan
- This was the best way to create my product because even before creating this plan, I already think ahead. I have revised and considered unexpected things to come.
- For now, I don’t have any other ways to use to make my product. I considered this as a master plan, and it will not fail in the middle of the way just like that. If necessary and urgent, than I will revise my plan and test it if the new one works.
Analysis of Process
1. Are there any other possible ways to accomplish my goal? What is it?
- I don’t have any other possible ways to accomplish my goal. This is all I’ve come up, and it’s the best I can think of. If there were, I would love to state it here and use it as a backup plan.
2. What materials do I want to use? What materials will I need to purchase?
- This questions may seem the same as question number five. I need a photo editing software and computer, and of course a camera. I have most of them already at home. All I need to purchase is the Lumix LX4.
3. What supplies does the school have that I can use?
- Honestly, the school can’t provide even one of my needs, since the school doesn’t really give the students any supplies. The library is an exception, since I can go there and scan through books by my own will. Even though the library can provide me with books, they are limited. And the internet connection can’t even be called fast.
4. What construction skills will I use? Will I have to practice any techniques?
- Graphic design, photography, and last but not least, social skills. Without those three, my project would not have a stand point. I have get grip on those three skills, but if I stop and did not continue, I’ll surely get rusty. Those three should always be practiced all the time.
5. Will I need to research any techniques or the use of specific tools/equipment?
- The techniques that will be used are graphic designing and photography techniques. I do not need to do any more research. Specific tools include, computer, graphic drawing tablet, Adobe Photoshop CS4 or CorelDRAW X4, SLR camera.
6. How much am I prepared to spend money, time, and effort?
- I am prepared for anything in order for my project to be completed. I’m not boasting, but talking about money, I can spend millions of rupiah if the process of the project requires me to. Time was usually a very difficult decision to make, however, I am willing to sacrifice my free time during the weekends. I’ll put my best effort into this project, even it means sacrificing my dearest “everything”.
